I am typically always down to sign up for a conference or a training! I love conferences and trainings because they always help me improve my knowledge and skill set. Consequently, the idea of attending a retreat at first did not feel worth my time. If I want to relax, I’ll travel with my family or I’ll spend a day intentionally not working. I have always felt no desire to spend time with other doulas and perinatal professionals on a “retreat.” I did not see the value.
Saying yes!

As you may have guessed, I was very hesitant to say yes to guest speaking at a retreat. My talk would be about creating passive income for one’s business. I said yes because I always love the opportunity to present and share. I did not think I would be taking home so much! I’m not just talking about sea shells, I am changed! I am inspired and excited! My visions are even more clear! I know this will propel my purpose and my achievements.
Making connections

I made lifelong connections at the Birth Worker Restore and Renew Retreat in Holden Beach, North Carolina. The connections I previously had strengthened tenfold. There is something so transformative about being surrounded for a length of time with like-minded and inspiring powerhouses. We all share the same dedication to supporting families.
Connecting with others who are also navigating the complexities of birth work and owning a business reminded me that I am not alone. There’s a powerful sense of solidarity in knowing that others are walking a similar path, facing similar struggles, and celebrating the same victories.
A time for renewal

This retreat offered more than relaxation—it provided clarity, direction, and a renewed sense of purpose for both my personal life and my business. From the moment I arrived, it was clear this was a unique gathering. Surrounded by people who deeply understand the joys and challenges of birth work, I felt a strong sense of belonging and validation. As we openly shared stories, insights, goals, worries, challenges, and fears, it became evident how much we each bring to this field.
All the benefits

Workshops and sessions during the retreat were thoughtfully curated to help us explore our “why” as birth workers. They helped us peel back the layers to understand what drives us. This process gave me a clearer vision of my purpose and the direction I want to take—not only in business but in life. I was able to step back and see my work from a new perspective. I realized where I want to expand, what truly resonates with me, and how I can serve families more authentically.
Having time to clarify my vision has given me renewed focus and energy to bring back to my community. One of the most profound aspects of the retreat was recognizing that despite the often-isolating nature of birth work, we are not alone. So many of us have experienced the same doubts, challenges, and rewards. The retreat helped us realize that we have a network of support! We have people who will lift us up, share resources, and encourage us to pursue our dreams. Knowing I have this community to turn to is invaluable as I continue my journey.
Until next time

As I leave Holden Beach, I am carrying with me not only memories of a beautiful, restorative week, but also a deeper connection to my purpose and my colleagues. The retreat has left me inspired, focused, and reassured that I am on the right path. I feel equipped with new ideas to grow my business. I feel a sense of a stronger community that will continue to support and uplift me. This experience solidified my commitment to birth work. It gave me a clear sense of where I’m headed, both in my business and in my life.
Being a part of so many social media groups that share accurate information has also solidified my commitment to make sure families and birth and postpartum professionals have a safe place for support and gather evidence-based information. I cannot wait till next year’s retreat and I am planning ways to keep in touch with this amazing group!
