When I first trained as a doula, I had no idea where to begin. I walked out of my training full of passion and excitement. I loved the work. I loved the vision of supporting families. But when it came time to actually turn this into a career, I felt stuck.

At the time, my family depended heavily on my teaching salary. I invested YEARS into my education and my career as a Special Educator and I felt scared giving that up. The idea of walking away from that stability was terrifying. I remember thinking, “How do I make this work? Where do I even start? Am I crazy for wanting to do this?”

It took me two years to figure out how to fully transition from teaching into owning a doula agency. And let me be clear, it wasn’t an overnight success story. It was messy. It was scary. There were moments when I doubted myself, moments when I wondered if I’d ever be able to make it sustainable. It took me years to fine-tune my perspective and finally feel like I was thriving in this career.

Looking back, I see how different that journey could have been if I’d had a mentor by my side.

Why Mentorship Matters So Much

Here’s the truth: training gives you knowledge, but mentorship gives you direction. A mentor is someone who’s already walked the road, someone who can look at you and say, “You’re not alone. Here’s what worked for me, and here’s how you can find your own way.”

When you have a mentor:

  • You don’t waste years spinning your wheels.
  • You gain confidence faster.
  • You learn the behind-the-scenes realities of this work (things no book or training can teach you).
  • You’re reminded that your dreams are possible, even when they feel out of reach.
  • You grow in this space faster and with less wasted time, money and energy.

Why I Believe in Mentorship

Since 2012, I’ve had the privilege of supporting over 10,000 families and mentoring over 1,000 doulas. And the more I do this work, the more convinced I am that mentorship changes everything.

I believe so strongly that when doulas connect with those who are established and those who are already where you want to be it’s like having a roadmap. You still have to take the journey yourself, but you don’t have to wander without direction.

And I can tell you from experience that guidance, reassurance and  community make all the difference.

You Don’t Have to Figure It All Out Alone

If you’re feeling unsure about where to start or how to grow your doula career, you’re not alone. I’ve been there. I know what it feels like to want this so badly and to be terrified of taking the leap.

But here’s the beautiful thing: you don’t have to walk this path in isolation. Mentorship is about more than learning skills. It’s about building confidence, finding your voice, and realizing you’re capable of more than you thought.
